when he saw Cheran Kopperunj-ceral-irumporai, he said
Purananuru 5
எருமை அன்ன கருங்கல் இடை தோறு,
ஆனிற் பரக்கும் யானைய, முன்பின்,
கானக நாடனை!நீயோ, பெரும!
நீயோர் ஆகலின், நின் ஒன்று மொழிவல்;
அருளும் அன்பும் நீக்கி நீங்கா
நிரயங் கொள்பவரொடு ஒன்றாது, காவல்,
குழவி கொள் பவரின், ஓம்புமதி!
அளிதோ தானே; அது பெறல்அருங் குரைத்தே.

Transliteration
Erumai aṉṉa karuṅkal iṭai tōṟu,
āṉiṟ parakkum yāṉaiya, muṉpiṉ,
kāṉaka nāṭaṉai!Nīyō, peruma!
Nīyōr ākaliṉ, niṉ oṉṟu moḻival;
Aruḷum aṉpum nīkki nīṅkā
nirayaṅ koḷpavaroṭu oṉṟātu, kāval,
kuḻavi koḷ pavariṉ, ōmpumati!
Aḷitō tāṉē; atu peṟalaruṅ kuraittē.

Translation
Your land lies within a dense forest with elephants everywhere,
as if they were cows, and scattered black rocks that look
like water buffaloes. Greatness! Because you are the man you are,
I have something to say to you! You must be as careful
in watching over your country as you would be in raising children,
so that you may not become one those who go to an endless hell
for their lack of compassion and love! How hard
it is to win command of a country and how vital is benevolence!
பொருள்
எருமை போன்ற கரிய பாறைகள் பொருந்திய இடமெங்கிலும் இடையிடையே பசுக்கூட்டம் போன்று உலவும் யானைகள் பெற்ற வலிமையான காட்டிற்கு உரிய சேர மன்னனே! நீயோ பெருமகன்!
அது நீயென்றால், ஒன்று சொல்வேன் கேட்பாயாக: அருளையும் அன்பையும் தம் வாழ்விலிருந்து நீக்கி விட்டவர் நீங்காத துயரத்திலே கிடந்து உழல்வர். அத்தகையாரோடு ஒருவராக நீ சேராதிருப்பாய்.
பெற்ற தாய் குழந்தையைப் பேணுவதுபோல் நின் நாட்டைப் பேணிக் காத்து வருவாயாக.
நாட்டு அரசனாவது எளிதில் வாய்ப்பதன்று. எனவே, அருளோடு காவல் நடாத்துக!
